How do I exit full screen mode in AnyDesk?

I accidentally entered full screen mode while using AnyDesk and can’t figure out how to get out of it. The usual shortcuts aren’t working and I’m stuck. Does anyone know the easiest way to exit full screen in AnyDesk? I need help getting my normal view back.

Ever Get ‘Stuck’ in Fullscreen on AnyDesk? Not a Bug, Just Hidden UI Shenanigans

So here’s a rant for anyone who’s ever tried to escape fullscreen mode on AnyDesk and thought, “Did my computer just break, or am I missing something obvious?” Been there, stared at that screen. Turns out, it’s not your machine acting up—it’s AnyDesk hiding its controls like they’re the last cookie in the jar.

What Actually Happens

You slam into fullscreen mode, expecting an easy way out. But—boom—the toolbar just vanishes. Or does it? Nope, it’s just hiding out, stashed at the top edge. Not gone, just in stealth mode. Seriously, it’s like a digital game of peekaboo.

How To Break Free (for Most of Us)

  1. Slide your mouse up to the dead-center at the very top of your screen.
  2. Pause. Don’t rush—wait a beat.
  3. Out of nowhere, bam, a hidden menu drops down with an “exit fullscreen” button.
  4. Click that sweet escape hatch.

Miss by an inch? Menu stays hidden. Nail the top-middle target zone, and you’re golden. It’s way too easy to slide just a little off and totally miss it.

Other Tricks That Might Work (Or Make You Ask Why They Exist)

  • Tap the ESC key. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it just blinks at you.
  • Smash Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Enter all at once. Yea, that’s a real combo. It toggles fullscreen on some AnyDesk versions, but it feels like a secret handshake.
  • On mobile, especially iPads: things can get extra weird. Try gently tapping along the upper edge, or bust out some swipe gestures like you’re conjuring a genie. Results may vary, but sometimes you coax the controls out of hiding.

TL;DR

You’re not locked in. Just hover that mouse (or finger) over the top-center of the screen and wait—your freedom button will swoop in.

If you’re like me and spent five minutes cursing at the fullscreen, don’t worry—you’re in good company.

Honestly, I love how @mikeappsreviewer paints it like some kind of secret agent move just to get outta fullscreen, but I gotta disagree a liittle with the mouse-hover method being the go-to solution every time. Not disputing that it works (sometimes), but on my setup, AnyDesk’s hidden bar hardly ever likes to play nice—I’ve learned to keep a different “escape plan” in my toolbox.

Here’s a brutally honest take: sometimes, the whole “hover up top” thing DOESN’T trigger the bar, especially if your remote session is laggy, your display scaling is weird, or you’re working on a multi-monitor mess. You can wiggle the mouse till your wrist aches, nada.

So what do I do? Smash Alt+Tab to flip to a different window (on your own machine, not the remote one). AnyDesk will briefly minimize or “lose focus,” which for me—like magic—sometimes snaps it OUT of fullscreen, or at least brings the controls back. It’s a workaround, and not exactly elegant, but way faster than mouse-fishing.

If that fails, try this: hit the Windows key twice. First press opens the start menu over your session, second closes it. Doesn’t always break fullscreen, but again, sometimes jogs things loose in the same way, especially on Windows.

Another thing—sometimes minimizing (Win+D to show desktop) and then clicking back on AnyDesk gives you your window controls back. Annoying? Yes. Works? 6/10 times for me.

Sidebar: On Mac, green dot in the top left is your magic key, IF you can reach it. On Linux with weird window managers, you’re just rolling the dice, lol.

So yeah, I’d say forget the idea that there’s one “easy” solution—AnyDesk kinda ignores UX when it comes to fullscreen escapes. You gotta have a couple tricks up your sleeve. The mouse-hover might be official, but rapidfire Alt+Tab + Win key pressing is my go-to messy hack. And, worst case? End the session from the taskbar.

If anyone knows a way to just always have those stupid controls pinned, please drop it here because I’m convinced there’s some setting buried six menus deep and I’d pay with my left sock to find it.

Honestly, I’m surprised neither @mikeappsreviewer nor @boswandelaar mentioned the nuclear option: just kill the process. I know, sounds extreme, but when you’re actually, truly locked in and nothing works (hovering, magic key presses, incantations, ritual sacrifices), just hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc, pop open Task Manager, and end AnyDesk. Done. You’ll lose the current session, sure, but at least you have control back instead of living a fullscreen horror movie.

One more thing—sometimes AnyDesk’s settings actually let you tweak the “show toolbar in fullscreen” option. Dig into the settings (when not trapped like a rat), and under Display or User Interface, make sure the toolbar isn’t set to auto-hide forever. YMMV but worth a shot.

Also, can we talk about the irony? Remote desktop apps are meant to give you access and you end up needing detective skills to exit fullscreen… Classic. And shout out to everyone here fast-tapping Windows keys like they’re inputting cheat codes—tried and true.

TLDR: If all else fails, kill AnyDesk from Task Manager and set that interface to show the toolbar, because a remote session shouldn’t feel like an escape room.

Quick rundown for any AnyDesk fullscreen escape artists stuck in interface limbo: hovering’s fine, but mouse precision isn’t my thing after two cups of coffee and a cramped laptop trackpad. Sure, the top-center menu reveals itself—sometimes. But seriously, does anyone actually enjoy that UI “hide-and-seek”?

What nobody’s mentioned yet: try Alt+Tab out of the session, then right-click the AnyDesk preview in your taskbar and select “Restore” or “Close Window.” Not ideal, but when fast key combos and toolbars hide like shy woodland creatures, Windows’ own switching magic can knock AnyDesk out of full screen with less drama. Bonus: you can open any other window to snap out of session shock.

Versus the competition: @boswandelaar is Task Manager-happy, which is solid—nuke it from orbit if desperate (con: session loss). @nachtdromer puts faith in the hidden toolbar (pro: session stays intact, con: you better have a steady hand). @mikeappsreviewer leans into All Key Combos All The Time—good luck remembering that “secret handshake” on four hours of sleep.

For the product itself:
Pros—fast connections, good stability, cross-platform.
Cons—UI quirks like this fullscreen trapdoor, and not-so-transparent interface logic.

Takeaway: keyboard shortcuts are only half the story, and brute force shouldn’t be plan A unless you like losing your spot. AnyDesk needs a more obvious, user-facing exit option, period. Until then, Alt+Tab is my low-key hero.
